Making Money With Drop Shipping – Picking Your Products

Drop Shipping 101 - Making Money Drop Shipping

You chose your niche, you know where you are going to sell your products,  you have created the framework for a  website, and you are eager to get started with creating your new income stream. But making money with drop shipping requires you to choose which high-quality products you are going to sell.  With many products and suppliers available to you, choosing the correct products can be overwhelming. To make the selection a little easier, I have  compiled four tips to consider:

1. Know your target audience. Whether you are selling to supplies to hobbyists, products to businesses, or  consumables to repeat customers, be sure you know your target audience well before choosing what products you are trying to sell to them. Each of these individual groups has different needs, and if they feel like you add true value to their lives, you will be able to build a relationship that will last.

2. Choose products with accessories. Products that have many accessories available, are a great way to create more sales out of one transaction and have your customer come back for additional accessories. Make sure that you offer a wide variety of extras for products in this category, and update them regularly.

3. Choose timeless products. If you are choosing products for sale that has continued new models and updates, you will have a lot of extra work in promoting and creating website content for each of these updates. Classics – like watches, for  example, will need less content updating and product changes than technology products do. If you are choosing products that are do fall under the category of constant model changes, beware that you need to be willing to put in the extra effort to stay relevant.

Making Money Drop Shipping4. Choose smaller products. In order to be able to offer free shipping and other incentives, choosing a smaller product, with less shipping cost will save you a lot of money. Do not underestimate the power of offering free shipping to your customers, though, so keep this extra cost in mind when choosing what products to drop ship.

I have a website and I know exactly what products I want to drop ship. What is my next step? Do I contact the merchant? Do I need to add a shopping cart to my website. This is great to help me get started but there is a lot more I need help with. Can you help me iron out the rest of these details?

    Claudia,
I have to begin by saying that you had me at: “Inspiring Independent Abundance And Online Income For Today’s Women.”
I absolutely love that! It seems that you are speaking directly to me, as drop shipping is something I have researched quite a bit, but never had the guts to actually try. I even have a subscription to a wholesaler directory… I adore that you are invested in women and really appreciate the work you have put into this site!
All the Best to You 🙂

As a person with no knowledge of drop shipping I certainly learned a lot Claudia. So what is drop shipping exactly? From what I gather its basically being the middle-man of shipping products to consumers?

    • Claudia Blanton Jul 6,2016 at 8:36 pm

In short drop shipping is where a marketer offers products to consumers, without ever holding any products themselves – collecting orders from customers, and redirecting them toward the wholesalers, who in turn will ship it directly to the customers. Your job would be to find customers, to collect their info and their money, and to give a portion to that money to the wholesaler – who in turn does the rest. Similar to affiliate marketing you are the middle-man or woman. Blessings!

Hi, Claudia. I enjoyed your post. I think Drop Shipping is a good way to start out when you want to be in control of your own finances. I write about work from home jobs and business ideas and this I believe is a lucrative one. There are more sites online that offer free ways to start.

    • Claudia Blanton Jul 6,2016 at 2:48 am

      Hi Sam,
drop shipping is actually the first type of online business model I tried. I love it, despite the fact that it was a steep learning curve, and that it was during a time where information on how to find legitimate wholesale suppliers was almost non-existent. Oh, we made some mistakes! But having learned so much since then, I am happy to share all of those hard-won experiences and lessons with you all here now.
      Blessings!

    Claudia,

I’m starting to set up my own online store, glad I came across this! I’ve been reading about drop shipping and want to seriously use for this purpose (obviously).

Any good agents you know of that connect you with suppliers? Or should I just reach out to the company itself?

I had considered drop shipping but couldn’t figure out how to get started or what products to sell. Your four tips are very helpful in understanding – I hadn’t focused on what to sell, and didn’t understand my target audience. I wasn’t considering that money is made in the accessories, and sometimes more so, than in the main product. I wasn’t thinking of timeless products, just the next shiny penny, so to speak. And I wasn’t considering shipping costs.

These are all important to consider in drop shipping. Thanks for sharing.

    • Claudia Blanton Jul 6,2016 at 12:13 am

there is a lot to consider when starting drop shipping, which is why I dedicated a few articles on the subject. As with any other passive income stream, doing your research is important, in order to maximise your financial gain. Glad you found this article useful – blessings!

Great information on how to get started in a dropshipping business. Do you know of any plugins that help you in creating a good looking store page to advertise your products. I’ve been looking for something that would make it easier. Thank you.

    • Claudia Blanton Jul 6,2016 at 12:11 am

Hi Larry, sorry I do not know about any plug ins, but I highly recommend using Shopify as a store front website. As far as I know wordpress themes are not exactly store front friendly. I will be writing a review on Shopify shortly, so stay tuned for that! Blessings!
